"Into the Wind"

$325.00

Original watercolor on paper

12 × 16 inches

2020

This painting is from East Boothbay, Maine where I was born and raised. The boats were moving on their moorings into the shifting wind, providing me with a unique view of one of the boats that made for an interesting painting. I also think there is a nobility to the lobster boat. It performs a function with incredible utility while showing what I think are some of the prettiest lines a boat can have. I also think the beauty of the working waterfront should also reflect the character, or wear and tear on the boat and equipment. These highlight the hard, rugged work these people perform each day, in all kinds of weather. That’s what really makes these subjects beautiful- this work isn’t easy or for the faint of heart. And it doesn’t take long for a perfect paint job to wear in once the season starts. It is here where the rugged beauty is revealed, and the character of the working waterfront comes through.
